Officials broke ground Wednesday morning on a highly anticipated new development in downtown Knoxville.

Marble Alley will include a large apartment complex, a 350 space parking garage, and the first new swimming pool to be built downtown in decades.

Marble Alley will be located on State Street between Commerce and Union Avenue, which is now a county-owned paid parking lot. The county originally bought the property in the late 1990’s for a proposed justice center that never happened.

In the early 20th century, that lot was part of the original Marble Alley, which linked Market Square and the Old City, and it’s hoped that will be the case again with this new development.

Eventually, retail space could be available in Marble Alley.

Developers expect construction on the $20 million dollar project to take two years.
